David Gerard

David is an associate professor and the chair of the department of economics at Lawrence University.  His research interests are in risk regulation and public policy, particularly in areas of energy and the environment.  David regularly teach courses for the Environmental Studies program.

David came to Lawrence in 2009 after eight years at Carnegie Mellon University, six as executive director of the Center for the Study & Improvement of Regulation (CSIR).  At Carnegie Mellon, he taught courses in the Department of Social & Decision Sciences and for the masters program in  Engineering & Technology Innovation Management (ETIM). He maintains a Carnegie Mellon connection as an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Engineering & Public Policy

David was also the recipient of the 2014-15 Faculty Convocation Award, and gave a talk on climate change at the Honors Convocation in May 2015. He has also given recent talks on corporate social responsibility and a Freshman Studies’ lecture on Thomas Schelling’s Micromotives & Macrobehavior.

David’s Ph.D. is in economics from the University of Illinois and his B.A. is in American studies and economics from Grinnell College. He first came to PERC in 1997 as a Graduate Fellow and was a Research Fellow until 2000.
